Tipuana tipu, Pride of Bolivia   A member of the bean or legume family of plants and trees, many of which do very well in the mediterranean climate. It has clusters of small yellow flowers in early summer and gives light shade through the divided leaves. Originally from South America it is much used throughout the mediterreanean climate zones of the world as it grows relatively quickly and has moderate water requirements. Once established all irrigation can be removed. In milder locations it is evergreen but seasonal leaf loss does occur sometimes and is not harmful to the tree. It makes a medium sized tree when mature and is ideal for situations where you wish to establish a screen or shade in a relatively short time.
